Insects Photo Albums

This page provides links to albums that feature galleries of insect images that display portraits of individual species. See Taxonomy note below.

Winged Insects (Pterygota)

Class Pterygota (Winged Insects) splits into infraclasses Palaeoptera (Ancient Winged Insects) and Neoptera (Modern, Wing-folding Insects).

Ancient Winged Insects (Palaeoptera)

Banded Demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) female perched at Le Moulin Du Bousquet on the River Aveyron in France

Mayflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies

The album features photos from skimmer and darner dragonfly families; forktail, broad-winged damselflies, and spreadwing damselfly families and a mayfly.

Modern, Wing-folding Insects (Neoptera)

Eastern Burnet (Zygaena carniolicae) perched on flower head at Peyreleau in Tarn Gorges in France

Moths

Displayed images include species from four moth subfamilies: slug moths, owlet moths, geometer moths and hawkmoths.

Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) female at Peyreleau in the Tarn Gorges region of France

Gossamer-winged Butterflies

The album displays blues and coppers from two of the four gossamer-winged subfamilies.

Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus) feeding on nectar at Peyreleau in Tarn Gorges region of France

Brush-footed Butterflies

The album displays six of the eleven brush-footed subfamilies including admirals, monarchs and emperors.

Oberthur's Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus armoricanus) feeding on nectar at Tarn Gorges in Aveyron, France

Skippers, Whites, and Swallowtails Butterflies

Displayed photos include species from the skipper, white and sulphur, and swallowtail butterfly families.

Insects Photo Album Taxonomy

Insecta (Insects) comprises three subclasses: Archaeognatha (Jumping Bristletails), Dicondylia (Silverfish) and Pterygota (Winged Insects), only images from the latter subclass feature in the photo album collections.

The figure shows a simplified taxonomic diagram arranged in time-ordered evolutionary history that illustrates the classification of Pterygota (Winged Insects).

Pterygota splits into two Infraclasses:
(1) Palaeoptera (Ancient Winged Insects),
(2) Neoptera (Modern, Wing-folding Insects).

The simplified taxonomic diagram arranged in time-ordered evolutionary history shows Ephemeroptera and Odonata classification, the only two orders placed in Palaeoptera.

The Mayflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies Photo Album comprises Ancient Winged Insect images that include one species from Ephemeroptera and two suborders from Odonata: Anisoptera (Dragonflies) and Zygoptera (Damselflies).

The figure represents a time-ordered evolutionary history diagram that shows moths, part of Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths) placed in superorder Holometabola and infraclass Neoptera (Modern, Wing-folding Insects).

The Moths Photo Album features images from four superfamilies:
(1) Zygaenoidea (Slug Moths),
(2) Noctuoidea (Owlet Moths),
(3) Geometroidea (Geometer Moths),
(4) Bombycoidea (Hawkmoths).

There are around 44 Moth superfamilies.

The figure shows a simplified taxonomic diagram in time-ordered evolutionary history illustrating Papilionoidea (True Butterflies) which are part of Lepidoptera.

Traditionally Papilionoidea comprises five families with Hesperiidae placed in the superfamily. However, recent studies place Hesperiidae in Papilionoidea.

Butterflies split into three Photo Albums:
(1) Gossamer-winged Butterflies (Lycaenidae),
(2) Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae),
(3) Skippers (Hesperiidae), Whites (Pieridae), and Swallowtails (Papilionidae) Butterflies.
