Murraylands and Limestone Coast

Murraylands and Limestone Coast

Photo album of places visited in Murraylands and Limestone Coast regions from two road trips. Firstly, in September 2013, we briefly visited the Coorong National Park and Meningie while driving from Robe to Victor Harbor. Then again, in October 2019, while on a circular South Australia tour, travelling south to Naracoorte. Photos from both trips feature, but only the places visited in 2013.

The Coorong National Park is an attraction spanning Murraylands and Limestone Coast from Goolwa to a 42-mile crossing. It is accessible from Kingston and Meningie via The Princes Highway. Meningie and Lake Albert at the northern end of the Coorong is home to Australian pelicans and other water and seabirds.

The first image in the gallery, from the 2013 road trip, shows The Coorong National Park from Princes Highway. On our second visit to the Coorong, we turned off the highway at Salt Creek onto Loop Road. We stopped to walk the Lakes Nature Trail, an easy-going three-kilometre loop passing Pipe Clay Lake. A balmy day was excellent for lizards but not so good for bird photography. Features wildlife endemics include a brown thornbill and an eastern shingleback lizard. There were few landscape photography opportunities.

The Australian pelican roost was on a small islet surrounded by reed beds at the edge of Lake Albert. Adult and immature pelicans were together with at least one little-pied and several little-black cormorants. Several adults decide to fly, making clumsy take-offs. Also shown are pelicans flying at Meninge.

After photographing pelicans at Meningie, we drove to Victor Harbor. It was a bit of a drag having to go around the lakes to get across the Murray River. Finally, we reached Victor Harbor early afternoon to explore Granite Island before taking an evening Penguin Tour.
