La Vallee de Ferney Nature Park

It is worth stopping at Mahebourg before travelling to La Vallee de Ferney, especially from the southwest. This small town is on the southeast coast and has a waterfront promenade with panoramas across the bay.

Ferney – Reconnect with Nature (Ref 1) is home to one of the last endemic forests in Mauritius. Further, the La Vallee de Ferney Conservation Trust (Ref 2) has a program of indigenous forest restoration. Also, it is home to several threatened endemic animal species.

Mahebourg and La Vallee de Ferney

First is a photo landscape of Vieux Grand Port and Lion Mountain from the Mahebourg waterfront. Next are two landscapes featuring Bois de Nattes a Grande Feuilles (labourdonnaisia glauca), a Mauritius endemic tree. Then three images are landscapes taken from several vantage points on a circular walk around the reserve. The extent of the invasive traveller’s tree is evident in most photos of the forest. However, the invasive Chinese guava was less noticeable, except when used to construct trail steps.

Unfortunately, we did not see much wildlife. However, we see an Aldabra giant tortoise and introduced species that assist in forest regeneration by grazing. The final photo shows one tortoise drinking water from a puddle in a grassy area.
