Tasmania Nature and Wildlife

This photo album features Tasmania Nature and Wildlife from a road trip in October 2013.

Tasmania is an island-state off Australia’s south coast, surprisingly large, with diverse regions, including smaller offshore islands. It has around forty national parks, conservation areas and reserves. And is home to one of Australia’s largest conservation areas, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tasmanian Wilderness.

Six-day Road Trip in Tasmania

First, we spent an afternoon and evening exploring Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city, staying overnight.

Next, we travelled to Strahan on the wild and wet West Coast, with en-route stops: Lake St. Clair National Park for a scenic walking tour and Nelson Falls in Wild Rivers National Park. Two nights at Strahan allowed for a six-hour Macquarie Harbour and Gordon River Cruise in the Wild Rivers National Park.

Then, two nights at Swansea for visiting Freycinet National Park with an en-route stop at Cradle Mountain National Park. Freycinet is on the warmer and drier east coast; see map Ref 1.

Finally, to Port Arthur in Tasman & Southeast region to explore the Historic Site, one of eleven UNESCO  listed penal sites. And an overnight stay near Taranna before flying to Sydney.

Our destinations offered varied landscape, nature, and wildlife photography opportunities on this short six-day tour.
